What is Type 1 Limestone?
Type 1 is a crushed limestone aggregate, graded from 40mm down to dust. When compacted in layers, the dust binds the larger stones together to form a hard, load-bearing sub-base — the foundation beneath roads, driveways, patios and paths.
Both MOT Type 1 and the cheaper DOT Type 1 are the same crushed limestone. The difference is certification and grading control — which decides whether the material is right for a highway or just for your back garden.
Two grades, one material
- Both are 40mm-to-dust crushed limestone
- Both compact to a firm sub-base
- MOT Type 1 is highways-certified
- DOT Type 1 is the value alternative

Which one should I choose?
Roads & commercial
Choose MOT Type 1. Certified to highway spec for traffic loads and building control sign-off.
Driveways
Choose MOT Type 1 for vehicle load. DOT Type 1 works for light foot-traffic drives.
Patios & paths
Choose DOT Type 1. Same firm sub-base at a lower price — ideal where no spec is required.

Type 1 Limestone FAQ
What is Type 1 Limestone?
Type 1 is a crushed limestone aggregate graded 40mm down to dust. When compacted it forms a hard, load-bearing sub-base used under roads, driveways, patios and paths.
What is the difference between MOT Type 1 and DOT Type 1?
MOT Type 1 (sometimes "DOT Type 1" in the certified sense) is tested and certified to the Highway Authority specification (SHW Clause 803), making it suitable for roads and commercial construction. The cheaper "DOT Type 1" alternative is the same crushed limestone but uncertified — fine for domestic projects where a highways spec isn't required.
Which one do I need for a driveway?
For a driveway that will take vehicle traffic, MOT Type 1 is recommended for the strongest, most stable sub-base. For lighter use (patio, path, shed base) DOT Type 1 offers the same look and good performance at a lower price.
How much do I need?
A typical sub-base is laid 100–150mm deep. As a guide, 1 tonne covers roughly 5m² at 100mm compacted depth. Use our tonnage calculator, or get a quote and we'll confirm the right quantity.
